-----  All Amateurs & SWLs welcome to this site of Calcutta VHF Amateur Radio Society  -----

The JK Fox Hunt 2007 was a VHF Fox Hunt (Amateur Radio Direction Finding Exercise) which was organised by the Bengal Amateur Radio Society in the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass area (located in the eastern fringe of the city of Kolkata) on Sunday, 18th February, 2007.

THE FOX HUNT, A LONG AWAITED EVENT, WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. This was the 2nd Fox Hunt in Kolkata
12 years after first hunt held in 1995 (the society was

then known as the Calcutta VHF Amateur Radio Society) when around 15 - 20 radio hams had participated in the event. The fox hunt in 1995 had been won by the group consisting of VU2EM, VU2KIM (now silent key) and VU2GTG. Since then the number of active hams had grown in Kolkata and the city hams had for long waited for another fox hunt.

The JK fox hunt was dedicated in memory of the Late Ashok Gooptu, VU2JK founding member and previous Vice-President of the society and was appropriately named the JK Fox Hunt 2007. The list of the 35 radio amateurs who participated in the JK Fox Hunt
2007 are as follows:

Fox:
VU2DPM

Fox Hunt Coordinators:
VU2NKI & VU2HFR

Safety Coordinators:
VU2SKD, VU2EWS, VU2TIL & VU2ADM

Competitors:
TEAM 1: VU2EM, VU2MDG, VU2GTG, VU2JNB
TEAM 2: VU2GMT, VU2SZU, VU2BBE, VU3SJR
TEAM 3: VU3BIS, VU3BIV, VU2CSB, VU3RUN, VU3JFA
TEAM 4: VU3MKX, VU3MZB, VU2SKI, VU3SJD
TEAM 5: VU2SYD, VU2PBI, VU2AMB
TEAM 6: VU3ARF, VU2MDL, VU3DMS, VU3IAD
TEAM 7: VU2KFR, VU2SKC, VU2JSH
TEAM 8: VU2KUW, VU3RXJ

The area of the hunt was a stretch of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (area of around 50 square Km) map of which created using Google earth image had been distributed to all participants. The fox den was located at a farm house around 3 Kms from the main
road following a winding trail between acres of paddy fields. The fox VU2DPM (Deepak) had a Kenwood TM261A as the Fox TX along with a plumbers delight dipole antenna around 20 feet AGL.  The TX timer wasdesigned and brewed by VU2EWS (Somnath).

The hunt started at 0900 hours on Sunday, 18th February, 2007 with an announcement on the VHF repeater at around 0850 hours. The duration of the hunt was 3 hours. The Fox Frequency was 145.500 MHz nbFM (as many participants had home made XVRs with XTALS on that frequency. The fox signal was an unmodulated carrier (30 seconds on and 1 minute off) running 10 watts into a dipole from 0900 hrs - 1000 hrs and 5 watts from 1000 hrs - 1200 hrs. Hunters had a tough time because from a distance of around 1 Km from the fox den the hunters got confused with extremely strong fox signals.

The first team to find the fox and receive the VU2JK Winners Trophy was the team comprising of Kitchu (VU2KFR), Joy (VU2JSH) and Shyamal (VU2SKC) using a 3el yagi and 40dB attenuator pads. They reached the fox at 0950 hours, 50 minutes into the hunt. The second team comprising of VU2SYD (Sunil), VU2PBI (Prasanta) and VU2AMB (Ananda) found the fox at 1038 hours and received the VU2AJE Runners Trophy. Their gear consisted of a 3el yagi, home made TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) handifinder and attenuator pads. The third team of VU2SZU (Zafar), VU2GMT (Ashish) and VU2BBE (Biswajit) using a home made TDOA handifinder reached the fox at around 1120 hours. All the teams reached the fox den by 1200 hours. All teams travelled in motor cars, the safety teams were on motor bikes. The only exception was a team comprising of VU2KUW (Bappaditya) and VU3RXJ(Kanak) who reached the fox on a cycle rickshaw and made the hunt even more exciting. All hams found the hunt extremely exciting and had great fun and decided to make the fox hunt an annual event of the society.
The hunt ended with the prize distribution ceremony and a sumptuous lunch sponsored by the society.

5th May 2005 Indian Space Research Organisation's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C6, carrying India's remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-1 and a 42.5 Kg micro satellite HAMSAT, blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 10.22 hrs IST and HAMSAT was inserted to a Near Circular Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (628 x 621 kms) at 10.41 hrs IST

HAMSAT is a microsatellite for providing satellite based Amateur Radio Services to the national as well as the international community of Amateur Radio Operators (HAMs). HAMSAT will meet the long felt need of the Amateur Radio Operators in the South Asian region

who possess the  required equipment  and operate in the UHF/VHF band based satellite radio communication.  One of the transponders of HAMSAT has been developed indigenously involving Indian HAMs, with the expertise of ISRO and the experience of AMSAT-INDIA. The second transponder  has  been developed  by a  Dutch  Amateur  Radio  Operator  and  Graduate Engineering student at Higher Technical Institute, Venlo, The Netherlands. It will stimulate technical interest and awareness among the younger generation by providing them with an opportunity to develop their technological projects including offering a platform. Some of the new technologies being tested in HAMSAT include Integrated Processor based Electronic Bus Management Unit, Lithium Ion Battery and Gallium Arsenide based Solar Panels.

HAMSAT gets  an OSCAR number . In the future HAMSAT will be referred to as

VUSat-OSCAR 52 or VO-52 for short.
